Looking at living things LIFE PROCESSES Looking at living things

Living things Although all living things look different from each other, they all have eight things in common. These eight things are called life processes. Something is only alive if it does all eight processes.

THE EIGHT LIFE PROCESSES

1 All living things move

Animals move their whole bodies to get from one place to another. Plants turn towards the light and their roots grow down into the soil.

All living things regulate 2 All living things regulate

The internal environment of all living things needs fluids to run effectively Fluid balance is maintained in both plants and animals Animals drink water, especially if they are hot or sweating. Plants grow in places where there is a source of water for them, their roots will absorb it from the soil.

All living things are sensitive 3 All living things are sensitive

All living things respond to changes All living things respond to changes. Living things notice changes in their surroundings and react to them. Eg. Plants grow towards the light. Eg. People react to the temperature around them.

All living things respire (cellular respiration) 6 All living things respire (cellular respiration)

Plants and animals use the oxygen in the air to turn food into energy. This happens in your cells too, oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged.

5 All living things grow

Babies grow into adults. Seedlings grow into plants.

All living things reproduce 6 All living things reproduce

Animals have babies. New plants grow from seeds.

All living things excrete 7 All living things excrete

Waste substances must be removed from the body of the plant or animal Plants and animals both need to get rid of wastes (Gases like oxygen or carbon dioxide, solids and water.)

All living things need nutrition 8 All living things need nutrition

Food is used to provide energy. Green plants make their own food using sunlight. Animals eat plants or other animals.

The eight life processes 1. Move 2. Regulate 3. Sensitive 4. Cellular Respiration 5. Grow 6. Reproduce 7. Excrete 8. Nutrition

Use the first letter from each process to help you remember them. Move Regulate Sensitive Cellular Respiration Grow Respire Excrete Nutrition They spell MRS C. GREN

This is MRS C GREN ! Can you remember what each of the letters in her name stand for ?

Move Regulate Sensitive Cellular Respire Grow Reproduce Excrete Nutrition

Well done !
