2 Plants, animals and humans have more in common than you might think
because they are all living things

3 Let’s take a look at them.
What do all living things have in common? There are 7 things. Let’s take a look at them.

4 All living things … Grow

5 Food Nutrition What else do all living things need?
Remember, plants make their own using photosynthesis and we eat ours. The scientific name for this is Nutrition

6 These pictures show something else that all living things do.
Can you guess this one? Have babies The scientific word for this is Reproduce

7 Another thing that all living things do is use oxygen to turn food into energy.
We usually think of this as breathing but the scientific word for it is Respiration Plants take in oxygen through the tiny holes on the underside of their leaves. This helps the photosynthesis process.

8 Movement The next one is
You are probably thinking that a plant cannot move but actually there are ways that it can. Plants can grow towards a light and even turn to grow upwards if they fall over.

9 Humans and animals need to get rid of waste from their bodies
Humans and animals need to get rid of waste from their bodies. The scientific name for this is Excretion Plants excrete (get rid of) water and gases which escape through the tiny holes on the underside of the leaves.

10 Humans and animals know about the world around them through their 5 senses. Can you name them?
Plants do not have the same 5 senses as us, but they are sensitive to their environment in other ways as they can respond to light and temperature. The scientific word for responding to (sensing) the world around us is Sensitivity

11 That’s 7 processes that all living things have in common. Let’s recap.
M R S N E R G Movement Respiration Sensitivity Nutrition Excretion Reproduction Growth People often try to remember them by taking the first letter of each one to spell Mrs Nerg

12 Challenge – Can you match up each word to a picture?
Growth Movement Respiration Excretion Sensitivity Nutrition Reproduction Well done scientists!
