What Does A Green Campus mean to UCC For UCC to be a Truly Green University all three of the above functions need to be operating from the same Green Agenda, all feeding into each other creating a synergy of sustainable activity running through UCC

 A new Environmental Course has been approved and will start in September as a direct result of the Green Campus initiative.  There are 35 courses relating to the Environment in UCC e.g…  BE Energy Engineering  MEngSc Sustainable Energy  GREP Eng Energy Systems  There has been on average 37 Conferences and events per year, held on the Environment over the past three years. Teaching

 Circa 20 million spent annually, on Environmental and Sustainable research over the past 3 years.  226 papers on average published yearly on Environmental and Sustainable research over the past 3 years. The ERI was established in 2000 through the Higher Education Authority (HEA) Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions. The Institute has over 150 researchers with a similar number of research projects funded through both national and international agencies. Carbon Footprint…  First University in Ireland to have our total carbon footprint calculated.  We also had a review of our strategic performance across a range of campus peers in the UK where we performed well.  As part of our annual energy report, we analyse the carbon emissions related to energy.  We have a Carbon Sequestration programme running at present in relation to our trees.

 Energy :  23,000 tonnes CO 2  Overall C0 2  30,000 tonnes C0 2 (including commuting)

Green Campus - Results Waste  A Recycling Rate of 65% has been achieved up from 21%  1015 tonnes is the cumulative total diverted from Landfill since program began.  University saved € 731,000 in cumulative waste costs since program began.  Food Waste is now separated  New mowers were purchased to mulch the grass back into the soil  All leaves and branches are composted on site and used on campus.  Waste oil from the kitchens is now collected, converted to biodiesel and used to run the two Estate vans.

 Commuter Plan formally in place since 2005  Full-time Commuter Plan Manager  Park & Ride (first university in Ireland)  Car Pooling Scheme - GoCar / CarSharing AVEGO “Shared Transport”  Sale of Annual Travel Passes doubled  Pro-active promotion of Cycling.  Provide high quality walking routes ( Sli na Slainte)  Promotion of Innovative Mobility  Comprehensive information and communication  Significant increase in Bicycle parking facilities Travel

 Tree management plan\planting schedule for the next 5 years with native planting priority.  Staff and students have built Polytunnels and are growing organic food.  Training Provided on Bio Diversity to staff.  The Ogham Alphabet was planted by students.  A Japanese Dry Garden has been built  GPS mapping of all trees  An interactive map of all significant campus trees Bio - Diversity

Direct Results Other  The Main Restaurant offers an organic option.  The Main Restaurant has compostable coffee cups.  B&E staff have actively supported local green projects.  The energy rating of houses must now be displayed by Landlords before being allowed to advertise with the Accommodations Office  Fair Trade food and coffee.  Green awareness week is now held.

Procurement  Green purchasing is now part of all tender contracts.  Recycling of old equipment is also built into contracts  Priority is given to sustainable goods.  100% of UCC’s purchased Electricity is Green 2012  Give preference, where items are of similar standard and cost, to those that are manufactured with a high recycled content  Consider the energy usage/cost of operating equipment prior to purchase.  Consider whole life costs of and impacts when assessing equipment for purchase
