The Pearl By John Steinbeck

Characters Kino-a man who dives looking for pearls/he is poor/he has black hair and a mustache. Juana-Kino’s wife/has long black hair Coyotito-Kino and Juana’s baby Juan Tomas-Kino’s brother Apolonia-Juan Tomas’ wife Various other divers and their families Villagers

Setting The Gulf coast Kino and Juana’s brush house. The doctor’s fancy house The area where Kino and Juana try to hide.

Chapters 1-3 We are introduced to Kino and Juana. Their morning rituals are discussed. Coyotito was stung by a scorpion. Juana and Kino take Coyotito to the doctor. The doctor refuses to see Coyotito because his family does not have enough money to pay for his services. Kino finds a giant, perfectly formed pearl. Coyotito appears to be doing better. Kino dreams of what he will do with all of the money that the pearl will bring him. The doctor visits and gives Coyotito some medicine but Coyotito gets sicker anyway. Kino knows that the people around him want the pearl for themselves.

Chapters 4-5 Kino goes to the dealers to sell the pearl. The dealers only offer Kino 1,00 pesos but Kino knows it is worth more so he doesn’t sell it to the dealers. Someone attacks Kino. Juana wants him to destroy the pearl before anything else bad happens. Kino wants to take the pearl to the capital. Juana tries to throw the pearl back into the ocean but Kino catches her. Someone else attacks Kino and tries to steal the pearl but Kino kills him. Kino and Juana are running away. They hide out in Juan Tomas’ house.

Chapter 6 Kino and Juana are being tracked by people who wish to steal the pearl. Kino tries to get Juana to hide while he continues on. Kino tries to take care of the three trackers while Juana and Coyotito hide in the cave. Kino and Juana return to their village alone. Kino throws the pearl back into the ocean.
