SWIM FOR LIFE STAFF TRAINING THE NEXT GENERATION

How did we get here? In 2005 the National office assigned Ontario and Alberta branches the task of creating a single Swim Program standard (Swim for Life ® ). The Ontario and Alberta branches were assigned as each had developed and implemented their own Learn to Swim programs.

Focus of revisions… To ensure a seamless flow and integration between the 6 Swimmer levels of Swim for Life ® and the 3 Canadian Swim Patrol levels (Rookie, Ranger, Star).

Swim for Life ® Program

The Swim for Life ® Program Swim for Life ® is organized in modules designed to meet the swim instruction needs of any age group: –Parent & Tot (1-3) –Preschool 1-5 (formerly A-E) –Swimmer 1-6 –Adult Swimmer 1-3 (formerly ) –Fitness Swimmer (NEW)

In each module, content is organized in the following streams and builds level by level and module by module: –Entries and Exits –Surface Support –Underwater Skills –Swim to Survive ® Skills (formerly Survival Skills) –Movement / Swimming Skills –Fitness (NEW)

Water Smart ® Education Water Smart ® drowning prevention messages are an integral part of the Swim for Life ® Program. These messages are embedded in content and program support materials. The Society will continue to provide tools to make this drowning prevention education last a lifetime.

Water Smart handouts

Overview Swim to Survive ® –A theme found throughout the levels and many progressions lead up to the mastery of the Swim- to-Survive ® standard in Swimmer 3 –Examples Rolling front to back - pendulum Side roll entry Surface support progressions

Water Smart ® –Went from a ‘Must See’ to a ‘Note’ –Would not hold back a child because they did not “understand” the messaging –Still exists on the worksheet and has been embedded into core plan & lesson plans Glides –Added to help the progression from floats to strokes –Strong feedback heard from affiliates to incorporate this progression

Endurance Swim eliminated and replaced with Interval Training –Long distances promote deterioration of strokes and reinforces bad habits –Shorter distances break up the skill into smaller chunks and promote fitness –Equal or greater distance achieved Flutter kick on the back introduced first –Reinforces proper body position and kicking efficiency without concern for breathing techniques

Surface Dives –A lifesaving skill, therefore it was moved into Canadian Swim Patrol PFD –Previously taught PFD ‘Survival Skills’ were removed and incorporated into the ‘Must See’ under the ‘Entries & Exits’ stream. –For example: In Swimmer 1 – Jump into deep water wearing PFD is evaluated with the ‘Must See’- Correctly fitting PFD donned on land

Fitness Swimmer The Fitness Swimmer Program is for swimmers of any age who want to improve their overall physical fitness in the water. Fitness Swimmer provides a structured approach to physical fitness based on accepted training principles and practices including interval training.

Fitness Swimmer Content includes: –Pace clocks and timers –Stretches for swimmers –Kicking interval training –Swimming interval training –Workout – 300 m –Workout design –Distance swim –Sprint swim
