Create a session plan for the age and ability you are teaching which teaches the participants about water safety Note: Base both sessions on a group of six participants. You will be practically delivering a minute section of one of the session plans you produce. As a contrast, aim to include at least one of the following aquatic skills: Submersion Sculling Push and glide Treading water Mushroom float Handstand Surface dive somersault Version 2

Version 2

6 Skill Development Once the non-swimmer has developed the skills necessary to progress through the water on the front or back, more specific teaching or coaching of the recognised strokes or aquatic skills can begin . The main theme of the session will normally be structured as whole-part-whole. Communication of whole stroke or skill – participant attempts the stroke or skill as a whole The stroke or skill is broken down into a series of progressive parts – participants progresses at appropriate level and pace Participant returns to attempting complete stroke or skill – progress can be evaluated Version 2

7 Skill Development....continued
The part-whole method is used when a new skill is being introduced for the first time and therefore early part practices need to be developed first before the whole skill can be attempted e.g. treading water Version 2

8 Time to Plan.... Version 2

9 Contingency Planning Working in pairs discuss one of the following potential challenges you may be faced with....what would you do? How would you deal with the situation? Summarise your thoughts on flipchart and present back to group. Too many participants Not enough participants Illness & Injury Slow improvement Rapid improvement Water temperature Version 2
