Focus Question: What is the structure and function of RNA?

 Take the page and divide it into 6 equal boxes  Number the boxes Notes: RNA

 RiboNucleic Acid  RNA- messenger between DNA and ribosomes to make proteins  Carries genetic info from nucleus to cytoplasm

 Made up of nucleotides  Single stranded  Has sugar ribose  Has nitrogen bases: Adenine (A), Cytosine (C), Guanine (G), Uracil (U)

 Messenger RNA (mRNA) – Carries the genetic information from the DNA in the nucleus out to the ribosomes  Ribosomal RNA (rRNA) – makes up ribosomes  Transfer RNA (tRNA) – carries amino acids to the ribosome

 Transcription –DNA is copied into mRNA  Happens in the nucleus  DNA Sequence: A T G C  RNA Sequence: UACG

 Translation: Process where mRNA is made into protein  Happens in the cytoplasm in ribosomes  mRNA read 3 bases at a time = Codon
