WELCOME TO OUR READING ASSESSMENT PREP INFO PRESENTATION CONGRATULATIONS!!!

ACCUPLACER TEST ACCUPLACER is an adaptive test. This means:  The questions are chosen for you on the basis of your answers to previous questions.  This technique selects just the right questions for your ability level.  Because the test works this way, you must answer every question when it is first given.

(continued from previous slide)  Each test is untimed.  You can give each question as much thought as you wish.  You can change your answer to a particular question before moving on to the next question, but  You cannot leave a question out or come back to it later to change your answer.  If you do not know the answer to a question, try to eliminate one or more of the choices. Then pick from the remaining choices.

ACCUPLACER TEST What to Take with You to the Tests On the day of the test, you should be sure to take photo identification and any other special materials your college may ask you to bring. Testing Time The multiple-choice tests are untimed. Students with Disabilities If you require test accommodations due to a documented disability, please contact the testing center for information concerning your needs.

ATTN: Students with Disabilities If you require test accommodations due to a documented disability, please contact the testing center for information concerning your needs.

Testing Regulations Check with your school to see about specific site regulations regarding calculators, textbooks, protractors, notebooks, dictionaries or other papers of any kind. Additionally, anyone who gives or receives help during the test, or uses notes, books, or calculators of any kind may not be allowed to continue the test. Your college will disregard a test score if there is reason to question its validity.

Accuplacer Format Description There are 20 questions of two primary types on the Reading Comprehension Test. Type 1 - Reading Passages Type 2 - Sentence Relationships

ACCUPLACER FORMAT DESCRIPTION TYPE 1 – READING PASSAGES  Consists of a reading passage followed by a question based on the text.  Both short and long passages are provided.  Reading passages can also be classified according to the kind of information processing required including :  explicit statements related to the main idea  explicit statements related to a secondary idea  application  inference

ACCUPLACER FORMAT DESCRIPTION TYPE 1 – READING PASSAGES  Each reading passage is followed by a multiple choice question, with choices A, B, C, and D. The questions on this part of the reading comprehension test fall into four different categories: 1) Main idea of the passage 2) Specific details in the passage 3) Implication or indirect references in the passage 4) Questions asking about the author's purpose

 Presents two sentences followed by a question about the relationship between these two sentences.  The question may ask, for example,  if the statement in the second sentence supports that in the first,  if it contradicts it, or  if it repeats the same information. Accuplacer Format Description Type 2 – Sentence Relationships

Accuplacer Format Description Type 2 – Sentence Relationships Accuplacer Format Description  The sentence relationship type of reading comprehension questions on the Accuplacer exam measure (1) your ability not only to read carefully and understand what you have read, but (2) also to draw logical relationships between the information given.

The relationship between the first sentence and the second sentence usually falls into one of the following categories: 1) Repetition of information 2) Problem and solution 3) Cause and effect 4) General principle and specific example 5) Contrast or contradiction 6) Analysis or expansion of a claim 7) Reinforcement of a statement 8) Drawing a conclusion or summing up For practice with sentence relationships and comprehension go to : Accuplacer Format Description (continued) Type 2 – Sentence Relationships

Tips for Taking ACCUPLACER Relax! ACCUPLACER was designed to help you succeed in college. Your score helps you and your advisor determine which courses are most appropriate for your current level of knowledge and skills. Once you identify your academic strengths and needs, you can get the help you need to improve underdeveloped skills before they can interfere with your learning. You will be able to concentrate better on the test if you get plenty of rest and eat properly prior to the test. You should also arrive a few minutes early so you can find the testing area, bathrooms, etc., and gather your thoughts before the test begins.

More Tips for Taking ACCUPLACER Pay careful attention to directions, and be sure you understand the directions before you begin each test. You should understand that this is an adaptive test. That means that questions are chosen for you on the basis of your answers to previous questions. Because the test works this way, you must answer every question; you may change the answer on a particular question before you have moved ahead to another question. If you do not know the answer to a question, try to eliminate one or more of the choices. Remember to bring a picture I.D.
