Educating for HVAC&R 1.ASHRAE’s Educational Programs 2.Working with Academic Institutions 3.What’s ahead for ASHRAE 4.How You can Contribute

ASHRAE’s Evolution in Education Recent History Professional Development Seminars Self Directed Learning Courses 1999 – ASHRAE Learning Institute 2008 ?

ASHRAE’s Educational Programs Chapter Meetings & Seminars Technical Programs at Society Meetings Professional Development Seminars Self Directed Learning Courses Short Courses

Professional Development Seminars One or two day seminars “Advanced beyond fundamental level.” One or more instructors, usually delivered in traditional lecture format. Workbook or text provided. Earns Professional Development Hours (PDH’s) for licensure renewal. Registration fees range from $500 to $800

Self Directed Learning Courses Equivalent in scope to university upper division courses of two credit hours. Designed to be taken at home or office. Includes all reference material and “skill development exercises” that can be submitted to ASHRAE for grading.

Self Directed Learning Cont. Targeted toward recent engineering graduates or practicing engineers who have entered HVAC&R from another field or other design professionals. Earns 35 PDH’s, Costs $250 Licensing Available (Chapters or Universities)

Self Directed Learning Courses Fundamentals of HVAC Systems Fundamentals of Thermodynamics and Psychrometrics (will be divided in future) Fundamentals of Heating and Cooling Loads Fundamentals of Air System Design

Self Directed Learning Courses Fundamentals of Water System Design (Also available in Spanish and SI versions) Fundamentals of Heating Systems Fundamentals of Electrical Systems and Building Electrical Energy Use Fundamentals of HVAC Control Systems Fundamentals of Refrigeration

Short Courses Typically 3 to 4 hours in length. Usually held in conjunction with another event such as Society Meeting. May or may not be repeated at future events. Registration fee approximately $95.

Short Annual Meeting in Hawaii Optimizing the Design and Control of Chilled Water Plants Humidity Control for Commercial Buildings Green Buildings and Sustainable Construction

Working with Academic Institutions ASHRAE Student Support Opportunities ASHRAE Named Scholarship - $50K Endowment ASHRAE Memorial Scholarship - $5K Endowment Underwrite cost of travel to Society meeting for faculty and/or students.

Working with Academic Institutions Department of Mechanical Engineering 446. Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning—Analysis of refrigeration and heating and air conditioning systems Solar Energy—Applications of solar energy to heating, cooling, and power generation. Solar radiation effects and thermodynamic and heat transfer effects in solar power equipment.

Working with Academic Institutions At UAB or other Academic Institution Meet with Dean and Department Head (Frequently). Come bearing gifts! Endowment Opportunities at UAB Student Award - $10,000 Endowment Scholarship - $25,000 Endowment Lectureship - $75,000 Endowment Research Program - $100,000 Endowment UAB Contact – Daphne Powell, Development Coordinator:

Working with Academic Institutions Consider equipping laboratory at university or technical college. Form Cooperative Research Agreements. Provide faculty and/or student summer internships. Provide senior design or capstone course problem. Secure speaker(s) for student branch meetings. (If not ASHRAE branch, consider ASME or others.) Cosponsor Seminars. Serve as Adjunct Professor.

What’s ahead for ASHRAE’s Educational Programs – Near Term New Professional Development Seminars Under Development “Humidity Control” “Advanced Water System Design” “Panel Heating and Cooling”

What’s ahead for ASHRAE’s Educational Programs – Mid Term Asynchronous Delivery Web based Self Directed Learning using dial-up modems PDS and/or Short Course (Topics to be decided) SDL (Controls)

What’s ahead for ASHRAE’s Educational Programs – Long Term SDL Sub Units as PDS or Web based ? Web Video (Broadband) ? Consortiums with such organizations as NTU, other universities (North America, International) ? Internet 2 ?

How You can Contribute

How You can Contribute Cont. Through Your Technical Committees (TC’s) Suggest Topics Review Material Become an author/speaker Through your Chapter Program Committee Chair offer any or all of the above. Through license with ASHRAE, chapter can teach SDL’s and receive all materials.

How You can Contribute Cont. Support your employees! “There is one thing worse than training employees and losing them to your competition, it’s not training them and keeping them.” Zig Zigler

What’s Your Vision for Education? ASHRAE Succeeds because of you! “Vision without action is merely a dream and action without vision just passes the time, but vision with action can change the world.” Joel Barker

Thanks for listening!
