Mechanical Engineering Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Engineering Technology

Advantages of Engineering at Kennesaw State University No Graduate Students Teaching Smaller class sizes Excellent facilities and Labs Accessibility to Instructors and help Opportunities in Research Opportunities in student clubs Low tuition

Mechanical Engineering

What is Mechanical Engineering? Mechanical engineering is arguably the broadest discipline of engineering. Application of the principles of mechanics and materials Applications in thermal/fluid systems & vibrations Design machines and devices

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS

Where do we find MEs? Aerospace industry Alternative energy Automotive industry Bio-Engineering- Medical Machine design Manufacturing Power generation and distribution Robotics and automation Thermal Systems - HVAC Job Titles: Project Engineer Design Engineer Consulting Engineer Test Engineer Manufacturing Engineer Process Engineer Engineering Manager

Nationally, ME has largest # of Engineering Graduates, EE is 2 nd Source: ASEE, Engineering by the Numbers, 2012--2013

BSME – High Demand and Salary ME is in top 10 highest starting salary average of bachelor’s degree - $60,900 And in top 10 mid-career salary with only Bachelor Degree – $99,700 Source: payscale.com -national averages - October 2014 Unemployment rate 3.1% - - usnews.com - 2014 Source: asme.org 2013

What Makes ME a Good Choice? ME is a “basic” engineering Very wide range of careers Good preparation for Graduate School and/or for Professional Engineering License www.asme.org

More about ME at Kennesaw State ABET Accredited Largest number of Students Seniors and Graduates can take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam After work experience, can take Professional Engineering (PE) Exam PE Licensure not necessary for many ME careers, but increases opportunity and pay Graduate School opportunities

Enrollment

Engineering Standing In addition to the stated prerequisites and unless otherwise noted in the catalog, engineering students must apply for and be granted Engineering Standing in order to enroll in any upper division engineering course taught in the College of Engineering and Engineering Technology. For the most part, upper division engineering courses are those with course numbers in the 3000’s and 4000’s.

What’s next Apply to Kennesaw State University Sign up for Orientation (earlier the better) Review for the Math Placement Test Attend orientation and register for classes

Questions? Dr. M. Loraine Lowder Assistant Professor, Mechanical Engineering Interim Department Chair loraine_lowder@kennesaw.edu 678-915-3425 http://engineering.kennesaw.edu/mechanical/
