Steel

November 15, 2012, Pittsburgh, PA -- In celebration of America Recycles Day, the Steel Recycling Institute (SRI) announced today that the recycling rate for the world’s most recycled material – steel – is at an all-time high of 92 percent. More than 85 million tons of steel scrap was consumed by steelmaking furnaces in 2011—an increase of nearly 10 million net tons versus Each year, more steel is recycled than paper, aluminum, plastic and glass combined, maintaining steel’s identity as North America’s most recycled material.

Amount Recycled  Plastic 12%  Aluminum 33%  Steel 92%

Introducing… Environmentally-friendly Powder Coating Process

Painting vs. Powder Coating  Powder coatings emit zero or near zero volatile organic compounds (VOC).  Powder coatings can produce much thicker coatings than conventional liquid coatings without running or sagging.  Powder coating overspray can be recycled and thus it is possible to achieve nearly 100% use of the coating.  Powder coating production lines produce less hazardous waste than conventional liquid coatings.

Prep Process for Powder Coating

 Hot water, lots of it…  Treat with Iron Phosphate used mainly as an ingredient in garden pesticides…  Rinse with lots more hot water  Drain into the sewer system or holding tank Conventional Prewash Why we don’t utilize

The Answer Was In Italy

Plaforization

 Plaforization puts nothing into the water, nothing into landfill and virtually nothing into the air!  Plaforization does not use water and is not rinsed, so there is no effluent, ever.  Plaforization baths are never dumped, only topped off as they are used.  Process oils are not skimmed and disposed of, but rather are used to contribute flexibility to the topcoat. The chemicals are not heated, so you are not creating Nitric Oxide or Sulfur Dioxide by burning fuel.  The Plaforization processes creates no sludge, so nothing is sent to landfill.  Due to extremely low vapor pressure, Plaforization emits only very small amounts of VOCs.

Curing

Gas Fired, Convection Infrared, Radiant vs.

Infrared Curing Because radiation rather than convection or conduction transfers heat, only the surface of the part and the powder must be heated rather than the whole part. The IR oven has no blowers or fans like a convection oven and thereby uses much less electricity and natural gas, depending on product mix, than convection ovens. The technology is also environmentally friendly and can help reduce emissions. Industrial Technologies Program Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy U.S. Department of Energy Source:

We took the next step as well…

EcoCoat ™ uses a Dry-off Oven that recuperates heat exhausted from the IR Cure Ovens

Eco Coat ™  Utilizes the most recycled material.  Low carbon footprint  Emits few pollutants into the atmosphere  Saves water  No solid waste  Provides a long lasting product
