Direct Object Pronouns *Direct objects receive the action of the verb in a sentence. *They answer the question whom? or what? about a verb. *The direct object can be a noun or a pronoun. Louisa is buying the blouse. (blouse = noun) Louisa is buying it. (it = pronoun)

Direct Object Pronouns Direct Object Pronouns (sometimes called DOPs) in English: Me You Him Her It Us Them

Direct Object Pronouns Direct Object Pronouns in Spanish: Me = Me Te = You (informal) Lo = Him, it, you (formal) La = Her, it, you (formal) Nos = Us Os = You all (informal) Los = Them, you (formal) Las = Them, you (formal)

Direct Object Pronouns Example in English: I want to buy the black shoes. What is the direct object? Black shoes What direct object pronoun can we use to replace “black shoes?” Them So the sentence becomes… I want to buy them.

Direct Object Pronouns Example in Spanish: Yo quiero comprar los zapatos negros. What is the direct object? Zapatos negros What direct object pronoun can we use to replace zapatos negros? Los So the sentence becomes… Yo los quiero comprar.

Direct Object Pronouns What did you notice about the PLACEMENT of the D.O.P.? Yo los quiero comprar. The direct object pronoun comes BEFORE THE CONJUGATED VERB!

Direct Object Pronouns Where do we put DOPs? BEFORE THE CONJUGATED VERB!

Direct Object Pronouns BUT…. IF there is an INFINITIVE… (an unconjugated verb—ends in ar, er, or ir) …the DOP can be ATTACHED to the infinitive! How fun!

Direct Object Pronouns Let’s go back to our original example: Yo quiero comprar los zapatos negros. We replaced “zapatos negros” with “los” and placed it….BEFORE THE CONJUGATED VERB! Yo los quiero comprar. But if you want to be super fancy and have fun, you can ATTACH the DOP to an infinitive. Do you see an infinitive? Yes… Comprar So your sentence becomes… Yo quiero comprarlos.
