Chapter 6 Lesson 1

 Most people during the colonial times did not go to college or high school.  Girls were taught how to keep a home and tend to children by helping with their own families and homes  Boys worked on the family farm or were apprenticed to artisans.

I’m my master’s ap-pren-tice I -am learn-ing his trade I do the jobs he won’t want to do I’ll fetch the water and build the fire too He teach-es me how to black-smith So I can be one –you’ll see I will work, learn, and study all day ‘Cause I’m learn-ing my trade…

An artisan is a skilled work-er He has a job that people need Work artisan – work - Artisan do your job for me An artisan is a rope mak-er, blacksmith, or a car-pen-ter Work artisan – work - Artisan do your job for me

 Open your textbook to pages  As you read, contrast the life of a colonial boy or girl compared to your life.  Make a T-Chart to show the differences My Life Colonial Times

 List some of the common jobs for people in America in the year  Look at the jobs listed on page 204.  Are any jobs similar?  Which job would you choose? Why?

 We have already learned that the jobs the early settlers relied on depended on the resources of the area in which they lived.  Think again about the jobs listed on the fact file.  Look at the map on page 205. What is the connection between the resources and the jobs?

 Read pages  Answer these questions in your social studies spiral. (You must copy the question if it will help you study for your test later on.)  Why do you think Boston and New York became thriving trade centers?  Summarize three possible outcomes for Africans being captured and brought to the slave ships.

The Mid-dle Pass-age was the trip That left our land be-hind The slavers, they destroyed our homes And stole us by and by The ships were crowded, dark, and cold With not enough food to eat……. Ma-ny died be-fore they saw the shore Of the West In-n-dies The Middle Passage was the trip That left our land be-hind…………

 Look at the map on the “Colonies Begin to Trade” worksheet.  How do we use the key to help us get information from the map?  What are raw materials that come from the colonies?  Add slaves as an import from the West Indies into America.
