COMPARATIVES LOS COMPARATIVOS Instructor: Ema Mateica Sosa / TL Hanna

In order to compare adjectives, nouns and adverbs that are not equal in quality or quantity we use the formulas below: MORE…. THAN = MÁS … QUE LESS… THAN = MENOS… QUE José es más fuerte que yo. Jose is stronger than me. Yo soy menos fuerte que José. I’m less strong then José.

Keep in mind that the adjective needs to agree in number and gender with the subject!!! Ex: John es mas serio que Joanna O  masculine singular Joanna es mas seria que Ana. O  feminine singular Los chicos son mas serios que las chicas. os  masculine plural Las chicas son menos serias que los chicos. As  Feminine plural

ATENCIÓN !!!!!!!!!! As in English, some comparatives are Irregular. We do not say in English “More good” but  BETTER Más bueno/bien MEJOR good  better Más malo/mal PEOR bad  worse Más joven (persona) MENOR young  younger Más viejo (persona) MAYOR old  older

Let’s practice On the next slide you’ll see pictures of celebrities. Make comparison. Ex: Dwayne Wade es más atlético que Oprah. Dwayne Wade is more athletic than Oprah Oprah es menos atlética que Dwayne. Oprah is less athletic than Dwayne. Angelina es más guapa que Eddie Murphy. Angelina is more beautiful than Eddie Murphy. Your turn now   

Comparatives of EQUALITY: In order to compare adjectives and adverbs we use this formula. tan + adjetivo + como as + adj + as No tengo una casa tan grande como la fcasa de Peter I don´t have a house as big as Peter´s tan +adverbio + como as + adv + as Caminamos tan pronto como pudimos. We walked as quickly as we could

In order to compare QUANTITIES (as many as / as much as): As many +noun+ as = TANTOS*/TANTAS* + noun + COMO: Pablo tiene tantos libros como la biblioteca Pablo has as many books as the library. As much + noun+ as = TANTO* / TANTA* + noun + COMO: Tiene tanto dinero como Bill Gates. He has as much money as Bill Gates. * Tanto / tanta / tantos / tantas have to agree in number and gender with the noun

Let’s practice This time make comparison of equality. Ej Dwayne Wade es tan atlético como David Beckham D.W is as athletic as D.B. Oprah tiene tanto dinero como Mark Zuckeberg. Oprah has as much money as MZ. Angelina es tan guapa como Beyoncé. Angelina is as beautiful as Beyoncé. Your turn now   
