PREDATORY LENDING 1

STUDENTS WILL REVIEW BASIC SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN FEDERAL AND PRIVATE LOANS. STUDENTS WILL DEFINE WHAT A PREDATORY LENDER DOES AND WHO THEY TARGET. STUDENTS WILL DISCUSS SIGNS OF ABUSIVE LENDING, PREDATORY LENDING INDICATORS, AND PREVENTATIVE STRATEGIES. Lesson Objectives 2

Breakout 1: Recap and Loan Review (10 minutes) 3 Directions: Complete and discuss the “Loan Review” handout. Federal Loans Private Loans What is a loan? Compare and contrast federal (both subsidized and unsubsidized) and private loans. Consider where the money comes from, how to apply, eligibility requirements, and advantages of federal loans.

Breakout 2: Predatory Lending (20 minutes) 4 Directions: Complete the “What is a Predatory Lender?” and “Common Signs of Predatory Lending and Preventative Strategies” handout.

Breakout 3: Predatory Sharks and Minnows (15 minutes) 5 Directions: The class will momentarily be divided into a large group of “Minnows” and a smaller group of “Predatory Sharks.” Sharks will identify themselves by using their arms to make a “jaws” gesture. Minnows will stand on one side of the room/space in a line and try to cross to the other side of the room. Sharks will move around in the middle of the room and try to tag a Minnow. If a tag is made, the Shark must try to hook the Minnow using a predatory lending indicator (from the student handout). The Minnow can escape if he/she can employ a strategy to avoid the abusive lending. If the Minnow can correctly do so, the Shark becomes a Minnow. If the Minnow provides an incorrect or no response, he/she becomes a Shark.

Reflect and Review (5 minutes) 6 Individually complete your “Student Reflection” handout. Then spend 2-3 minutes in your small group sharing what you learned or how you can apply today’s workshop content. Think about: What information resonated with you about today’s workshop? What information was new to you? What information was most helpful to learn about? Why? What knowledge can you pass on or share with family members? Be ready to share your key learnings with the class.

Closing (2 minutes) 7 HOMEWORK: Share two indicators of predatory lending and ways it can be prevented. Discuss abusive lending practices they have heard of or encountered. PRE-WORK FOR THE NEXT WORKSHOP:
