2 STUDENTS WILL DISCUSS THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING A SMART SHOPPER AND KNOW HOW TO PRIORITIZE AND TRACK THEIR SPENDING. STUDENTS WILL REFLECT ON WHAT DEBT MEANS TO THEM. STUDENTS WILL DEFINE DEBT AND STRATEGIES FOR PREVENTING DEBT INCLUDING PROPER CREDIT CARD MANAGEMENT. Lesson Objectives 2

3 Breakout 1: Recap and Smart Shopper Skills (15 minutes) 3 Directions: Turn to the “Smart Shopping in Action” handout and review your assigned scenario. Determine what a smart shopper would and would not do. Remember to come up with 1-2 smart shopping tips. Present your 30-second scenario to the class and share your tips. As other groups present, record their shopping tips on your handout.

4 Breakout 2: Debt Reflection (10 minutes) 4 Directions: Complete the “Debt Reflection” handout and share your answers with the group.

5 Breakout 3: Tracking Your Spending (10 minutes) 5 Directions: Discuss and complete the “Tracking Your Spending” handout. Everyone has expenses. But those with strong money management skills (1) understand that some expenses (i.e. fixed and flexible expenses) are more important than others and (2) keep track of their income and expenses to ensure the are staying on budget.

7 Reflect and Review (5 minutes) 7 Individually complete your “Student Reflection” handout. Then spend 2-3 minutes in your small group sharing what you learned or how you can apply today’s workshop content. Think about: What information resonated with you about today’s workshop? What information was new to you? What information was most helpful to learn about? Why? What knowledge can you pass on or share with family members? Be ready to share your key learnings with the class.

8 Closing (2 minutes) 8 HOMEWORK: Talk with parents about debt and the one major takeaway you have from today’s workshop. PRE-WORK FOR THE NEXT WORKSHOP:
