Lighthouses  2 nd grade  Lesson – Lake Erie

Introduction  As part of living in Ohio, students need to understand the purpose behind lighthouses and know the names and locations of famous Lake Erie Lighthouses.

Day One  Reading – The Little Red Lighthouse and the….. By Hildegarde H. Swift  Speaker – Phillip L. Block  Writing  Movie clip – Pete’s Dragon

Day Two  Map – the four Lighthouses they will be touring.  Field Trip - Perry's Victory Memorial, Old Port Clinton Lighthouse, Sandusky Harbor Pierhead Lighthouse, and South Bass Island Lighthouse.

Concepts

Objectives  The second grade students will be able to:  Locate Put-in-Bay Island.  Identify Perry’s Victory Memorial.  Explain why sailors need lighthouses.  Describe a typical lighthouse.

Activity 1  listen to the book The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge by Hildegarde H. Swift and Lynd Ward in a large group  read the book by themselves  discuss the story in small groups

Activity Two  Lights of the Lakes Slide Show  Lights of the Lakes is an hour-long slide presentation featuring the lighthouse photography of Phillip L. Block, who narrates the program.

Activity Three  individual write a story about a lighthouse by looking at pictures of lighthouses

Activity Four  Watch the clip of Pete’s Dragon when (Pete) is at the lighthouse cleaning the windows

Activity Five  On a map of the Sandusky, Ohio area showing Lake Erie, the students will plot the following places:  1. Perry's Victory Memorial on Put-in Bay Island, Ohio  2. Old Port Clinton Lighthouse in Port Clinton, Ohio  3. Sandusky Harbor Pierhead Lighthouse in Sandusky, Ohio  4. South Bass Island Lighthouse on South Bass Island, Ohio

Activity Six  Field Trip to Perry's Victory Memorial, Old Port Clinton Lighthouse, Sandusky Harbor Pierhead Lighthouse, and South Bass Island Lighthouse
