Overview Background to Faculty Action Plan 2010 Building Control – the future?

Background The Building Control & Standards Faculty launched September 2007 Wide ranging membership. Currently over 300 CIOB members have expressed an interest in Building Control Well over 100 Building Control professionals have registered interest in developing Building Control & Standards as a specialist discipline and future faculty Public interest in CIOB members operating in a range of professions – therefore a requirement to be better informed of standards required has implications for CPD.

Faculty Objectives Raise the professional profile of building control practitioners Share/disseminate and promote best practice in the field of Building Control and advise on standards Assist individuals who are currently working within all sectors of Building Control to gain additional recognised professional qualifications Offer a structured training programme to those new to the building control sector, and promote building control as a good career path Raise the profile and recognition of building control teams Create wider networking opportunities between building control teams and the industry. Develop formal links with relevant professional bodies/ provide representatives (‘ambassadors’) Provide a forum for the promotion of best practice, and for networking with other construction professionals Encourage wider recruitment into the building control profession

Benefits to Building Control Technical expertise available to wider membership Increased creditability with local and central government New faculty will better serve its members and through them increase public interest Develop ‘Ambassadors’ in field of Building Control Enable branches to engage with BC professionals and develop enhanced CPD provision Wider industry recognition and take up of PDP for graduate training

Part L – The Future?

Future of building control Recent government consultation The system has been very effective; for example, deaths caused by fires in the home are at the lowest for 45 years and over 97% of all new homes meet the current standards for sound insulation. The inclusion of access to buildings in the regulations has seen a positive cultural change where access is now more readily incorporated into the design of new buildings. In addition, the energy efficiency of new homes has been dramatically improved over the last ten years.

Future of building control Feedback from stakeholders tells us that, while the system is not broken, it has some significant weaknesses that must be tackled if we are to ensure that it remains fit for purpose in today’s world and in the future.

Future of Building Control – Implementation Plan Published 1 st September Covers such areas as: Vision & smooth interface with other services Better guidance – project guides etc Modernising inspection & enforcement Reform of disputes & complaints Alternative ways to comply Strengthening performance management Evidence of compliance Way forward – Milestone Map Change of Government!!

Future of building control Be careful what you ask for Things don’t always turn out how you’d expect them to!!! HOWEVER The CIOB is involved fully with this process through the Building Control Alliance and will take on board members comments
