Proper and Improper Fractions Section 3.1
Objectives Write a fraction to describe the parts of a unit Select proper or improper fractions from a list of fractions Change improper fractions to mixed numbers Change mixed numbers to improper fractions
Objective 1: Write a fraction to describe the parts of a unit
Objective 1 Fraction is a name for a number Upper numeral is the numerator Lower numeral is the denominator Shaded part of rectangle Yard stick Gas tank
Objective 2: Select proper or improper fractions from a list of fractions
Objective 2 Proper fraction – numerator is less than the denominator Improper fraction – numerator is greater than or equal to denominator
Objective 3: Change improper fractions to mixed numbers
Objective 3 Mixed number – sum of a whole number and a fraction with addition sign omitted (fraction part is usually a proper fraction) To change an improper fraction to a mixed number Divide the numerator by the denominator The quotient is the whole number part The remainder, if there is one, is the new numerator (Keep the denominator the same)
Objective 4: Change mixed numbers to improper fractions
Objective 4 Multiply the denominator times the whole number Add the numerator to the product from step one Write the sum from step two over the denominator (keep the same denominator)
