PEER LEARNING NETWORKS : A Systematized Practices embedded within the Rwanda culture PEER BASED LEARNING NETWORK

Content z Concept of peer Learning and School collaboration z Current Practices in Rwanda z Traces of peer learning in the Rwandan culture z Learning networks or Learning practices z Traces of Learning network in the Rwandan culture. z Building on positive traditions.

“ If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go with others”. African proverb

SCHOOL COLLABORATION

"Learning is finding out what we already know. Doing is demonstrating that you know it. Teaching is reminding others that they know just as well as you. We are all learners, doers, and teachers." ~ Richard Bach

Fundamental Principles of Peer Learning 1)Peer learning involves Self motivation and passion for professional growing. z Akanyoni katagurutse ntikamenya iyo bweze. z The bird needs to fly out its nest to find where ripe grain is z Ifuni ibagara ubucuti ni akarenge z The tool to keep friendship alive is made of visits

Fundamental Principles of Peer Learning 2) Peer to peer learning involves mutual support and exchange of experience and resources where possible, z Inkingi imwe ntigera inzu/ One wall doesn’t make a house 3) It is based on two ways development and reciprocity z Agasozi kamanutse inka kazamuka indi. The hill from which a cow walks down will see another climbing it zAkebo kajya iwa mugarura.

Fundamental Principles of Peer Learning 4) It is built over mutual respect and trust, empathy and sharing the same destiny: z Inkoni ikubise mucyeba uyirenza urugo z Giraso yiturwa indi./Good wishes offered, good wishes in return

Fundamental Principles of Peer Learning 5) It is based on mutual goals, collective efforts and shared responsibilities : zAkimuhana kaza imvura ihese z Nta mugabo umwe. z Umutwe umwe ntiwigira inama

Fundamental Principles of Peer Learning 6) Targets practical issues pertaining with the current issues and within the local context:  Ijya kurisha ihera ku rugo 7) It involves decision making, problem solving, conflict management, teambuilding skills, requires parity among participants, emotional competencies  Akanwa karya ntiwumve kavuza induru ntiwumve

Therefore zPeer learning among schools is even possible in Rwanda as it is supported by practices, values and beliefs embedded within the local traditions, z Peer learning is more likely implementable when supported by the peer review/ Peer evaluation= carried out by peers, as opposed to by a teacher, supervisor, parent, or expert. Critical friendship z Remain focused on pupils’ learning achievements, z Individual members ensure coordination, network, cooperation, etc…. z Encourages innovation and creativity, z Supported by a friendly monitoring and evaluation mechanisms

What happens today z 30 Schools of Reference are available 1 in each District to facilitate the activities under peer to peer learning; z A flexible action plan is elaborated by schools in the same learning platform at the level of the District upon which learning from each other will be implemented; z Some schools and peer groups demonstrated high commitments than others, z A good number of inivatives practices was identified throughout peer learning sessions; z These include: Study visits, debates and discussions in peer sessions on real life situation, peer reviews, exhibitions, technical works like harmonization of learning assessments tools, strategic planing, establishment of the HTs associations……. z
