Access to HE Diploma Linking London Qualifications Update Maree Walker - 24 March 2010

Major changes to the Access to HE Diploma in 2010 Grading The credit achievement required for the award of the Access to HE Diploma on all Access to HE programmes is a total of 60 credits. BUT All units that contribute to the Diploma awarded at Level 3 may now be graded.

Grade Specifications for the Access to HE Diploma Grade Descriptors There are seven descriptors that can be applied to units 1 - Understanding of the subject 2 - Application of the knowledge 3 – Application of skills 4 – Use of information 5 – Communication and presentation 6 – Autonomy/Independence 7 - Quality Descriptors are applied appropriately to units Quality is applied to all units

Grade Specifications for the Access to HE Diploma Rules of Combination The Access to HE Diploma can only be awarded on the basis of the accumulation of credits achieved on the particular set of approved named units which are identified in the Rules of Combination for that award. Grades will only be awarded for Level 3 units that sit within the Rules of Combination for the particular diploma and are selected to make up the 60 credits needed for the final award.

Major changes to the Access to HE Diploma in 2010 Access Awards Boards Final Awards Boards will be held for all centres after external moderation has been completed. Awards Boards will: i) examine compliance with Rules of Confirmation ii) confirm the award of credit iii) confirm the award of grades iv) confirm Diploma achievement

Implications of these changes to the Access to HE Diploma in 2010 Access Awards Boards All results will be finalised and confirmed at the Awards Board for each centre. Administration processes will be streamlined and certification turn around time will be reduced. Delays will be minimised.

Implications of these changes to the Access to HE Diploma in 2010 Grading HEIs are making graded offers through UCAS. There is some concern, not just in London, that these offers may be set too high for learners to achieve. HEIs are interested in the emergence of models of good practice for Access to HE offers

Guidance for HEIs about the changes QAA ssionsGuidanceHEStaff/AccessAdmissionsGuide.pdf Access to HE Diploma: making offers for the graded qualification Guidelines for higher education admissions staff September 2009 (for 2010 entry cycle) This document replaces previous guidelines for admissions staff published by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA): Access to HE Diploma: a new qualification (January 2007) and Access to HE Diploma: qualification developments (November 2008). An electronic version of this document is available to download and print from the Access to HE website (

Guidance for HEIs about the changes OCNLR Information for Higher Education Institutions ssionsGuidanceHEStaff/AccessAdmissionsGuide.pdf This page contains links and information related to Access to HE primarily for colleagues working in universities and other Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) offering higher education courses.

Implications of these changes to the Access to HE Diploma in the future It is too early to predict the impact of grading on progression opportunities. The combined effect this year of reduced HE places and increases in UCAS applications will necessarily impact on Access to HE learner progression for 2010/11. There is an OCN AVA commitment of monitor and report on progression patterns to QAA to inform future developments for the sector.

Implications of these changes to the Access to HE Diploma in the future OCNLR is committed to maintaining the position of Access to HE Diploma provision as a very successful route for mature learners to develop their career and life opportunities. As an AVA we will continue to work in the best interests of the learners who are seeking a second chance in education and striving so hard to achieve. We firmly believe in the transformational power of education and will continue to work with our partners to foster this at all times. Contact:
