Look it Up!! Using a Dictionary Presented by: Ms. Giorgi

…Not Just for Looking up Definitions! The Oxford American Desk Dictionary & Thesaurus is a useful reference tool. It’s got lots of information in the front “Reference Section” Let’s take a look.

Start at the top – Guide Words Guide words are located at the top of the page. Use them to help you locate the word you’re looking up! That’s why they are called “guide words”.

Entry Word The entry word is in blue. bicycle (bi sik el) n. A two-wheeled vehicle that you ride by pushing the pedals with your feet. I like to ride my bicycle to school.

Pronunciation The word pronunciation is in red. bicycle (bi sik el) n. A two-wheeled vehicle that you ride by pushing the pedals with your feet. I like to ride my bicycle to school.
