Welcome to CERN Accelerating Science and Innovation 2 nd March 2015 – Bidders Conference – DO-29161/EN

The Missions of CERN Push forward the frontiers of knowledge What are the constituent parts of matter? What was matter like during the first moments of the Big Bang? Develop new technologies Information technologies – the Web and the Grid Medicine – diagnostics and therapy Train the scientists and engineers of tomorrow Unite people from different countries and cultures 2

Particle accelerator : Boost particles to high energies and make them collide E = m x c 2 3. Computers : Collect, store, and send around the world the big quantity of data received from the detectors for data analysis. 6

ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT Cooling & Ventilation Group

Engineering Department The Engineering Department provides CERN with the Engineering Competences, Infrastructure Systems and Technical Coordination required for the design, installation, operation, maintenance and dismantling phases of the CERN accelerator complex and its experimental facilities. 11

CV Group Group Leader M. Nonis Projects M. Battistin Design Office Y. Body Operation S. Deleval Maintenance G. Peon Detector Cooling O. Crespo-Lopez Controls R. Barillère The mandate of the Cooling and Ventilation Group concerns the operation and maintenance of the cooling systems, pumping stations, air conditioning installations and fluid distribution systems for the PS, SPS and LHC including their experimental areas and special cooling systems of LHC sub- detectors. It also provides service to the Computer Centre and some miscellaneous installations. 12
