Cyber Bullying By Elly Rodriguez, Hannah Waverk and Stella Kilfoy

Moral Dilemma What is the obligations of a bystander in the case of cyber bullying?

LISTEN LOOK FOR THE FACTS

What are the facts you need to make a good judgment? Cyber bullies have freedom of speech can%E2%80%99t-stop-cyber-bullies/ 8.5% of all teens attempt to commit suicide Cyber bullying can occur to anyone who has access to the internet and social networking. In Illinois a school can expel a student for cyber bullying a student or faculty member

Who’s involved and why? The bully- want to feel power over something, have their own personally problems and pick on others to relieve the stress and pain. The victim- picked on for being dfferent, being smaller/weaker than the bully. The bystander- given the choice to watch, help, or encourage destruction. The parents-obligated to protect children make sure they are safe even when not in their The school- the students are attending the school. discipline rules apply, no bully tolerance, law enabling expulsion

When and where is this happening? With technology has become such a central part of our society, the tools needed for cyber bullying are very accessible. Cyber bullying can happen ANYWHERE and ANYTIME! Scary, right?

LISTEN IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITIES

What are the possible decisions I could make and what are the short and long term consequences? a)Stand by and watch b)Encourage the bully and throw in a couple nasty comments here and there c)Stand up for the victim and defend or assist them d)Tell and adult

Trick Question C and D are both correct! Many kids think that handling cyber bullies is easy enough for one person but truly the ideal solution is for the victim, child bystander AND an adult to all work together.

LISTEN SEEK INSIGHT BEYOND YOUR OWN

Dr. Haas Dr. Haas is a psychologist and after a discussion about bullying this is what she had to say about the role of a bystander. Kids that want to help kids that are getting bullied are wonderful; however one child alone is not enough. The weight of this serious problem is not fit for the shoulders of one child. Asking adults for help is the most safe and effective way of helping.

Mrs. Lynch We shared a video of a victim of cyber bullying to a substitute teacher in class one day. Our group shared the story of the victim with her. The victim was being bullied online for being homosexual. Our substitute gave us input about how she viewed cyber bullying and what bystanders should do in a situation like that. She thought that the bystanders should not just continue to stand by and watch for that would make them contributing to the bullying. She believes that they should begin to take power and share what they belive should be done to help the victims.

The Bible In the teaching of the Good Samaritan, God shows the benefits of helping those who need it most even if it is a hard thing to do. Just as the Good Samaritan stopped to help the person who needed it most the bystander should help the victim.

LISTEN TURN INWARD

First Impressions Our first impressions are that in a situation involving cyber bullying there are three major roles. There is the bully, the victim and the bystanders. Firstly we hope the victim can stand up for him/herself and terminate the bullying on their own. Secondly, if this does not work or the victim is unsure of how to stop this, ideally, a bystander would step into defend/assist the victim in the harassment. The last option I can think of is to find self confidence in yourself to ignore or block out the hurtful things. find others who appreciate you for all you are worth.

Motives The goal of a bystander is to help the situation. Our group believes the way to help is to step in and defend the victim as well as go and ask an adult for help.

What do I need from the outcome? As a result of helping a victim not only should you feel no guilt, but you should also feel a sense of pride for helping save and help this innocent victim.

LISTEN EXPECT GOD’S HELP

How is God with me as I discern what I should decide? God and The Holy Spirit both put a stress on consciences in this situation. A lot of this moral dilemma is gut reaction and what would be the wrong and right thing to do.

Prayer God, Please Help us love those who hate us. Help us forgive those who have hurt us. Help us find strength in ourselves and comfort in others. Amen

LISTEN NAME YOUR DECISSION

What is the obligations of a bystander in the case of cyber bullying? Our group believes that the bystander has the obligation to take action and help the victim. Cyber bullying is a form of bullying that can affect a person more than other forms of bullying. Cyber bullying allows the victim to be harassed at any moment of the day. We believe that the victim should try to stand up for them self or have others help them. Friends or bystanders should not believe that the victim can handle the bullying them self or that it will end. Our decision is that no matter the circumstances, the bystanders should take part and help end bullying. Whether that means helping the victim stand up for them self or telling an adult about this issue. Either way, the bystander must take action and help victims of cyber bullying and any other kind or bullying or harassment.
