Fingerprints

Do we all have the same fingerprints? No two people have the same fingerprints, not even Identical twins. That is why fingerprints are used to identify people.

The skin is the largest organ in the body. Our skin has two main layers: 1.The epidermis 2.The dermis

Epidermis The epidermis is the outer layer of the skin It is made up of dead skin cells. Epidermis

Dermis The dermis is the inner layer that is alive and contains blood vessels, glands, nerve cells, and hair roots. The dermis is much thicker than the epidermis. You can’t see your dermis because it is hidden under your epidermis. Dermis

If you touch something hot, the nerve endings in your dermis respond right away: "Ouch! That's hot!" Ouch !

Now lets talk about fingerprints!

How many kinds of Fingerprint patterns are there?

There are 3 Fingerprint Patterns

Whorl LoopArch

Where are fingerprints used? Crime Scenes

Where are fingerprints used? To get into buildings or into a computer

FUN FACTS! Our fingerprints go all the way down into the dermis of our skin. We have oils on our skin which leave our fingerprints on the things we touch. Loops: 60-65% Whorls: 35% Arch: 5%

It’s Your Turn! Now it’s your turn! You are going to take your own fingerprints and examine them with a magnifying glass. Which type of fingerprints do you have?

Do we all have the same fingerprints? No two people have the same fingerprints, not even Identical twins. That is why fingerprints are used to identify people.

What did we learn today? The epidermis is the outer layer of the skin. The dermis is the inner layer of the skin Our fingerprints go all the way down into the dermis of our skin. There are three types of fingerprints (arch, loop, and whorl)
