Do you when Pentecost is? Do you know the liturgical colour of Pentecost? Do you know what happened on the day of Pentecost? Do you know any symbols associated with Pentecost?

Pentecost Pentecost means the 50 th day It was on the 50 th day after Easter Sunday that the Church as we know it began. The risen Jesus had been with his disciples for 40 days before the ascension.

Pentecost is on Sunday 24 th May this year. The liturgical colour for Pentecost is red.

The story of Pentecost

Pentecost happened 50 days after Easter Sunday when Jesus rose from the dead. Jesus had already gone back to Heaven so the disciples and new believers of Jesus were waiting to receive the Holy Spirit because that's what Jesus told them would happen.

The ascension

Just before Jesus ascended up to heaven he told them that they would receive power when the Holy Spirit came. He told them that the Holy Spirit would be sent by God.

The disciples were together in Jerusalem and suddenly a sound like the blowing of a strong wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.

NextNext they saw tongues of fire that separated and came to rest above each of them. When the tongues of fire came they were filled with the Holy Spirit and the disciples began speaking in different languages.

Things must have sounded chaotic! Imagine all these people speaking many different languages at the same time and shouting out praises to God excited that something amazing from God had just happened to them.

The people asked how they could have the Holy Spirit in their lives. Peter said, “Ask God for forgiveness.” So the people were forgiven and God gave them the Holy Spirit and they began a new life. The dove is a symbol of The Holy Spirit.
