The significance of Pentecost comes from when tongues of fire, that represent the Holy Spirit, landed on the heads of the disciples. They then spoke in different languages, and later spoke with everyone about the Gospel.

One of the events during Pentecost is baptising adults, who have become Christians. Confirmation is another event when young people who have studied the Christian faith, confess their faith in church and take part in communication.

The liturgical colour for Pentecost is red, because when the Holy Spirit came down in flames. The colour red also reminds us of the blood of the martyrs. These people, with the help of the Holy Spirit, give their lives for their faith.

The symbols of Pentecost are the dove, and the dove imposed on the flame. The sound of blowing wind and tongues of fire are other symbols.

In Greek, ‘Pentecost’ means fifty days. This is the reason why we celebrate the festival ‘Pentecost’ in the 50 days after Easter.

Pentecost is known by several names Pentecost Is related to the Jewish festival of Shavuot In Italy it is a tradition to scatter rose petals from the ceiling of the churches to represent the fiery tongues Pentecost is sometimes called Whitsunday. The newly baptised people wore white robes on Pentecost so it is often called White Sunday or Whitsunday.
