Does smell affect the taste

Background information Well smell and taste are very similar. Yet they are very different as well. The smell and taste are a big part of our lives. Smell and taste affect our mood and the way we socialize with other people. When your sense of smell becomes wounded or damaged you lose you sense of taste. This will make you eat less. This will affect your mood throughout the day. You may feel very tired. This happens because, smell and taste have to two different nerves.Olfactory (smell nerve) and the Gustatory (taste nerve). Smell and Taste). When people eat and drink they smell the food as the aroma reaches. The tough has 4 taste sensations. Plus another called the Umami that is stimulated by MSG. In the old days cavemen use to smell there food in order to tell if it were safe or not. Now today people smell there food to see if it is fresh or not. How smell affects the taste) The loss of smell can also lead to the loss of memory. This could be the start of Parkinson or Alzheimer's disease. Researches found a relationship between your noses and how in the future you might be able to use it to detect Parkinson and Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Scientist also made some connection between your taste and Obesity. (The surprising impact of taste and smell). "Smell and Taste." American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. N.p., n.d. Hypothesis In my opinion I think if the sense of smell would ever become impaired you wouldn't be able to taste or smell.

Materials The materials that I will be using is 3 test specimens, Candy bars, and a camera.

Procedure First I will have three people line up right next to each other. Then I will give them each nose plugs so the nose will not be part of the tasting process. When each person tastes the food I will ask “ can you taste the food”? Each person will answer and I will record it. After the data is recorded I will put the information into spread sheet and it will be analyzed.

Data

Conclusion In my hypothesis I predicted you wouldn't be able to taste if your smell was impaired. My hypothesis was correct. I took two test subjects and had them eat a chocolate pretzel. While they were eating I had them plug there noses. After the food was in there mouth. I asked them to describe what they were tasting.
