The Scientific Method
2
The scientific method is the only scientific way accepted to back up a theory or idea. The Scientific Method is used to support or disprove a theory.
3
The Scientific Method involves 5 steps: Observation- what did you notice? Question - what question do you have? Hypothesis - predict what will happen Method – plan how you will test your hypothesis? Result- what’s your conclusion?
4
The Scientific Method Observation - You observe something in the world, using your senses or machines which are basically extensions of those senses. AH—Look at this!
5
The Scientific Method Question -You ask a question about what you observe. State the problem or question.
6
The Scientific Method Hypothesis- You predict what you think the answer to your question might be.
7
The Scientific Method Method - You figure out a way to test whether the hypothesis (prediction) is correct. This can be done with an experiment. The outcome must be measurable. Record and analyze data.
8
The Scientific Method Result- You do the experiment using the method you came up with and record the results. You repeat the experiment to make sure the hypothesis is correct.
9
The Scientific Method State Conclusion- You state whether your hypothesis (prediction) was correct or not and try to explain your results.
10
Scientific Method You will be using this sheet for future experiments. Review the sheet with your classmates.
11
Scientific Method Practice- Use the sheet for this next experiment. Can a balloon be inflated using baking soda and vinegar? you will need: baking soda vinegar plastic bottle funnel -2
