Why the Mass of St Francis? Simple elegance Key is appropriate for a variety of voice types The range is not extreme – one octave Organ accompaniment is simple and playable guitar chords are included Uses call and response Melodies use repetition and simple steps and leaps The rhythm of the lyric setting is appropriate and Can be expanded for choir and other instrumentalists This is an original setting of the Mass

Lord Have Mercy The Lord Have Mercy uses call and response. The melodic idea is introduced by the Cantor (yellow highlight) and repeated by the congregation (red highlight).

Glory to God Glory to God Opening phrase uses a simple upward melody in steps, then returning to the starting note.

Glory to God The second phrase uses a downward contour and repetition.

Glory to God The third phrase uses a two note motif repeated.

Glory to God New musical idea introducing a leap of a 5th and triplet. Both these musical elements are used throughout the mass setting.

Glory to God This 2 bar phrase uses the same notes whilst reintroducing the triplet motif.

Glory to God The downward contour is repeated in this phrase.

Glory to God The first 4 bar melody is repeated. The third melody is based on the first melody with the introduction of a new musical idea in bar 2

Glory to God The melody repeats the opening of the previous two phrases. A new musical idea is added in bar 2. This adds melodic interest to the music. This third melody concludes with the same downward step motif used in the previous phrases.

Glory to God This phrase is based on the melodic contour introduced in “Lord God, Lamb of God” and the two note motif for “give you thanks for”.

Glory to God This phrase is based on the melodic contour for “You are seated …”

Glory to God The Glory to God concludes with the highest note, giving the music a sense of climax and direction. Note, the range of the music is only one octave.

Holy, Holy, Holy The Holy, Holy, Holy is a simple melody using a range of steps and small leaps including the simple triplet rhythmic motif.

Memorial Acclamation 1 Memorial Acclamations Each of the acclamations is on the same melodic idea. A simple melodic contour with balanced phrases.

Memorial Acclamation 2 Melody is based on the first Acclamation

Memorial Acclamation 3 ✓ Slightly different rhythm to fit the lyric, but continues the same opening upward contour as the previous acclamations. Note, best to take a breath after the word World . (✓ = breath mark)

Amen The Amen is based on the same upward movement of the Acclamation.

Lamb of God Lamb of God First phrase is a simple balanced contour starting and finishing on the same note.

Lamb of God The second phrase reiterates the first phrase with slight melodic variation.

Lamb of God The third phrase repeats the first phrase. It concludes with an upward melody for “Grant us peace”.

Chants This is an example of Chants that may be used. You will note that this is the same as the previous melodic material but uses the new Mass setting.
