Enrich Social Studies Exit Project with Technology Overview of 8th Grade Social Studies Exit Project iLearn Social Studies Session 1 of 8

Focusing Questions What are the components of the Grade 8 Exit Project? How can we use the “Grade 8 Exit Project Instructional Guide” to guide our students through the Exit Project process?

Instruction

Framing The Session In this session we will: 1.Examine the three components to the Grade 8 Social Studies Exit Project. 2.Outline the subsequent seven sessions in which we explore how to integrate technology into the Grade 8 Social Studies Exit Project. 3.Create a sample project timeline using Microsoft Word.

Teaching An Exit Project is a culminating project in which students explore a topic in social studies in depth. Students research the topic and prepare a written, oral, and graphic presentation.

Guided Practice 3 Components: >Written >Graphic >Oral As we review each component, consider the various ways that technology can support each of these components.

The Written Component Technology Infusion: Microsoft Word typed report. PowerPoint slideshow notes.

The Written Component Rubric

The Graphic Component Teachers can guide students in their choice of a graphic component. Technology Infusion: >PowerPoint >Digital documentary using Windows MovieMaker or iMovie >Tri-fold with printed images and typed writing

The Graphic Component Rubric

Steps to Creating an Oral Presentation 1. Know your subject matter. 2. Develop a theme. 3. Prepare your script. 4. Rehearse. 5. Present. The oral component can take many shapes. It can be: - a poem - a song - a report

The Oral Component Rubric

Sample Exit Project Timeline (template on page 15 of the Exit Project Guide)

Work Time

Getting Started Now that we have looked at all the Exit Project rubrics, you will use the written and graphic components rubrics to assess a sample Exit Project: - “Bankruptcy Reform: Past and Present”“Bankruptcy Reform: Past and Present” ( (courtesy of NY State History Day Project) You will also adapt rubrics to reflect the integration of technology.

Work Time Work with your partner, use the rubrics to assess the written and graphic components of the sample Exit Project: - “Bankruptcy Reform: Past and Present”“Bankruptcy Reform: Past and Present” ( Consider how you might adapt the rubrics to reflect the infusion of technology in your classroom. Record ideas for integrating technology into the rubrics.

Share

We will share our assessments and discuss ways that we can use the rubrics for our classrooms. Share
