Adjectives that Compare Day 1

Adjectives that compare Add –er to an adjective to compare two persons, places, or things. Add –est to an adjective to compare three or more persons. The bird has longer legs than the frog. Longer compares two things- the bird and the frog. The giraffe has the longest legs of the three animals. Longest compares three things- the frog, the bird, and the giraffe.

Circle the adjective that compares two things Circle the adjective that compares two things. Underline the adjective that compares three or more things. The young frog is smaller than the adult frog. The tadpole is the smallest of all. Toads have shorter legs than frogs. The legs of a tadpole are shortest of all.

A chair is softer than a table. It is colder in Alaska than in California. Bath water is warmer than the sea. My table is longer than yours.

Day 2

You can use adjectives to compare people, places, and things. Add –er to an adjective to compare two nouns. Add –est to compare more than two nouns.

A baby is younger than I am. My legs are longer than before. I am the tallest person in my class. I am stronger than when I was a baby. I am the oldest child in my family. Now I am taller than my friends. I am the fastest runner in my class. Jan is the tallest girl. Bob is the fastest runner. My brother is taller than me.

Day 3

Adjectives that compare Adjectives can compare nouns. Add –er to an adjective to compare two nouns. Add –est to an adjective to compare more than two nouns. Paul dream about a high tree house. It will be higher than the old one. It will be the highest one in town.

Circle the adjective that compares. Pond water is warmer in the summer. In winter, pond water is coldest of all. It is darker under the water than above it. Algae are the smallest of all the plants in the pond. The slowest animal of all the animals near the pond is a snail. Our pond is quieter at night than during the day.

Add er or est to the adjective in each sentence. Paul chooses the (tall)___ tree of all. He works (fast) ___ than I do. We use the (strong) ____ wood in town. These nails are (long)___ than those are. The tree house is the (new)___ one of all.

Day 4

A tadpole is lighter than a frog. A frog egg is lightest of all. Circle adjectives that compare two things. Underline adjectives that compare three or more things. A tadpole is lighter than a frog. A frog egg is lightest of all. That egg is darkest of the three eggs. Frogs make higher leaps than toads. Toads have a plumper body than frogs. Does a bullfrog have the deepest croak of all frogs?

Underline the adjective that compares. Is your picture bigger than James? I think it is the biggest one in the class. The house looks smaller than Bobs. My crayon is shorter than yours. I am the fastest runner in the class. Jane is shorter than Emily. My fingers are colder than yours. Wood is stronger than paper. It has the hardest wood of all. That is the tallest tree on the street.
