VIETNAM WAR Myka Gonzales, Mike Bosserman, Nick Brenner

DEFINITIONS Domino Theory – If one nation becomes communists, surrounding nations will too. ( If one falls they all fall) Containment- The Us foreign policy in the era of cold war to keep communism from spreading. -- American’s fear during the cold war era was that the spreading of communism would turn the cold war into a hot war and our goal was to prevent this from happening by stopping the spread.

BEGINNING OF THE WAR »The Vietnam War started in the year 1959 »The war started because Vietnam was falling to communism of the Russians and the United States was trying to stop the spread of communism. »The US fought against the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.

WEAPONS US Troops » The M-16 was the United States standard weapon used during the war. The first time this assault rifle was used was in the Vietnam war by the US. The M-16 is still used today. » M-14- The M-14 was a sniper rifle that the US troops used during the war. The M-14 was later renamed M-21. » M-1911A1, CAR-15, M-72, M-79,.38 Special, M-2, M-1919A4, M-20, M- 67, M-1, M-60, M-203

Weapons extended NVA Weapons » AK-47 (Russian Rifle) - A gas operated, magazine-fed rifle which has a semiautomatic ROF of 40 rounds or 100 rounds on a fully automatic. » Chicom (Type-56, Chinese AK-47) - The chinese version of a AK-47. » TOKAREV (TT33 Pistol), MAT49 (7.62mm SMG), Type-24 (7.92mm HMG), MAKAROV (PM 9.5mm Pistol), SIMONOV (SKS Rifle), PPSh41 (7.62mm SMG), RPG-7 (Rocket Launcher), RPD-7 (.62mm GPMG)

WHERE & WHO »Occurred in North and South Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. »The United States entered the war to prevent a communists takeover of South Vietnam as part of our wider strategy for containment. »US involvement escalated in the early 1960’s because of we feared the “Domino Theory” of expanding communists empires. »North and South Vietnam were separated by a line in latitude called the 17 th parallel. This was because north Vietnam sided with Russia and became communists where as Americans were helping and protecting South Korea from communism.

ENDING OF THE WAR »The capture of Saigon by the north vietnamese marked the end of the war in April 30th »After 16 deadly years of fighting the war the two countries signed a peace treaty ending the war in 1973 that stated that the United States forces would leave Vietnam. »The cause of the war ending was the US and Vietnam were going to sign a treaty but the Vietnamese screwed the US over. »The US ordered bombing of Hanoi and Haiphong causing Vietnam and the US to sign a Peace agreement.
