North Vietnam was communist so it was supported by the Soviets and China. The United States supported the anti- communist government in South Vietnam. It began to send military to help the South Vietnamese army. In 1969, president Nixon began a policy called Vietnamization, which involved the withdrawal of American troops from Vietnam. On April 30, 1975 Saigon city fell to the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese army. Vietnam was united.
