Architecture The process and product of planning, designing and constructing buildings and other physical structures.

Project * Styles of homes vary between a simple design to an ornate design. You will decide what style of home you want to create from the following slides. You will NOT copy a design, but come up with your own alterations of the design. * You may also choose a style that I did not discuss. Design will be in either 1 or 2 point perspective. Medium: Graphite Due Friday, December 20 th.

Log Cabin Dates: up to 1850s. The earliest settler houses went up quickly, using the most abundant material around—wood—to protect against the harsh weather.

Gothic Revival Dates: 1840 to 1880 The style mimics the shapes found on Medieval churches and houses, and is almost always found in rural areas.

Victorian Dates: ca to 1910 American homeowners added mass-produced decorative trim (called gingerbread) to their small, simple cottages to dress them up in the style of the day. Very popular in San Francisco.

Colonial Dates: 1880 to 1955 This is one of the country's most enduring styles. Architecture based on Greek and Roman designs. Note the Doric columns.

Spanish Dates: 1915 to 1940 An incredibly popular style that filled out the suburbs in the years after World War I. Red tile roof.

Craftsman Dates: 1905 to 1930 Also known as Bungalow. Most popular in Pasadena, CA. From the Arts & Craft Movement. The Gamble House by Greene and Greene 1908

Modernistic Dates: 1920 to 1940 Inspired by commercial buildings of the time (like New York City's Chrysler Building). Exterior and interior is primarily white or gray.

Ranch Dates: 1930s to 1960s The Ranch was one of the dominant house forms of the second half of the 20th century. Most common in California; California Ranch Home

Frank Lloyd Wright American architect (Died in 1959). Designed over 1000 structures (mostly homes) “Organic Architecture” structure and environment to be in harmony. Most famous work: Fallingwater (1935)

Frank Gehry Canadian-American architect. Age: 83 His buildings have become tourist attractions. (Many are museums.) Buildings are free-forming shapes. Most famous work: Walt Disney Concert Hall (completed in 2003) in downtown L.A.

Julia Morgan American architect and the first woman architect licensed in California. (Died in 1957) Designed over 700 buildings in California. Best known for her work on Hearst Castle in San Simeon, CA.
