Dec. 8, US and Britain declare war on Japan. Dec. 10, Japan seized Guam and invade Philippines. By the end of the year Japan had taken over most of the pacific. Feb. 1, First U.S. aircraft carrier offensive move, Yorktown and Enterprise air raid Japanese bases in the Gilbert and Marshall Islands. General Douglas MacArthur returning to the Philippians

May 7-8, battle of Coral Sea – First aircraft carrier forces battle, US lost a couple of ships but cost Japan much more, a loss that would hurt them later in Midway June 4-7, battle of Midway – Yamamoto planned a surprise attack but the we heard about the plans and were ready for the fight, Japan lost 4 fleet carriers and didn’t take the base, we only lost 1 carrier Japanese aircraft carrier Hiryu USS Yorktown Japanese aircraft carrier Shoho USS Lexington

After the battle of Midway we started jumping from island to island to capture key islands and get Japan in range of our bombers, this was known as “Island Hopping” and was led by Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Commander-in-Chief of the Pacific Naval Fleet. This continued for a few years up to 1945

Feb. 19th, My Division landed on Iwo Jima, the base had 3 airstrips and was a halfway point from Japan mainland and other US bases. After 36 days over 6,000 of my men and 20,000 Japanese soldiers were killed

My letter Dear Mom, I’m doing fine, our division is quickly becoming known for our ability to take a secure beaches, we have occupied both Guam and Iwo Jima. The battles have been long and hard but we know it is for the good of the nation. I look forward to coming home, I’m am epically missing your cooking right now, all we’ve had to eat the past couple days is rice, our rations are coming though Tell everyone I love them. Sincerely Doug
