US joins the Allied Powers
War Crime: Japan puts Allied POWs on the Bataan Death March (16K killed)

4. Philippines: MacArthur returns and liberates the islands
Allies Strike Back
April 1942: Allies under Col. Doolittle bomb Tokyo, little damage is done, but shows Japan is vulnerable to air attacks
Battle of the Coral Sea – May 1942: Japan plans to invade Australia, both sides use aircraft carriers. Allies stop Japan
Battle of Midway – June 1942: Allied code breakers learn Adm. Yamamoto is planning an attack on Midway
Led by Admiral Nimitz, US launches a surprise attack that destroys 4 of Yamamoto’s aircraft carriers (turning point in war)
Pacific War is led by Gen. Douglas MacArthur who uses a strategy called “island hopping”.
Go from island to island take less defended islands first – moving closer to Japan
Battle of Guadalcanal - Aug 1942: Must stop Japan from building airbase, Allies win 6 month battle killing 31K of the 36K Japanese troops
Philippines: MacArthur returns and liberates the islands
