The Magnetic Car Challenge

The Magnetic Car Challenge The Opposites Attract Matchbox Car Company is looking for help from you and your partner!!! They need for you to design and build a magnetic car that can travel along the track without being touched. They plan to sell the best design to a cereal company, so your design may become a prize in kids’ cereal!!!

Engineering Design Process Ask: What’s the problem? What have others done? What are the limits? The Goal Ask Imagine Plan Create & Test Improve Imagine: What could be some solutions? Brainstorm ideas. Choose the best one. Plan: Draw a diagram. Make a list of materials you will need. Create & Test: Follow your plan to create it. Test it out! Improve: What worked? What did not? Make your design even better. Test it out!

ASK How can we design and build a __________________ _________ that will travel on a track without being touched?

What do you know about magnets…

Let’s do some research… What do we know about the physical characteristics of a car?

Let’s list the features of a car…

Requirements The car must travel the entire length of the track. The car must look like a car. You must use your magnet to push or pull your car.

Limitations You cannot touch the car in any way while it is on the track. Your car must not weigh any more than _______ grams. You have _______ minutes to build. Your car can be no longer, wider, or taller than three Unifix cubes.

Available Materials Paperclips Paperboard Tape Construction paper 10” X 10” Foil Two magnets Pasta pieces Screws Nails Straw Hot glue Washers

Imagine Draw an idea of how you can make a magnetic car that will travel the track without being touched. Circle your materials. IDEA 1Materials Used (circle) Paperclips _________ Construction paper Tape Paperboard Foil Pasta _____________ Screws Magnets __________ Nails _____________ Straws Washers __________ Hot glue

Challenge Jobs Builder – Draws the team plan. Everyone else copies it. Works with teammates to build. Audio-visual Recorder – Takes pictures (beginning/middle/end) and records the test. Tester – Conducts any tests so modifications can be made. Presenter – Shares design and results with the class.

Plan Share your ideas. Get and give feedback. Choose an idea that you agree is the best, or use everybody’s ideas to develop ONE plan. FINAL TEAM PLAN We will move the car by

Create and Test Work together and use your plan to create a car. Remember, the car must be able to complete the track without being touched. Record any modifications you made and why you made those changes!

SHARE! We used… We moved the car by… It weighs _____ grams.

IMPROVE What would you try next time (diagram with labels or sentences)?
