Look at an electromagnet at work http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yhNOX QkMpY

Background Information A local recycling center wants you to develop an electromagnet that will help them at their recycling plant. Your electromagnet needs to hold at least 50 metal scraps, AKA, washers and place them into the “dump truck”.

Prior Knowledge You met with a team of engineers and discussed variable changes for electromagnets. Use any and all ideas to create an electromagnet that will meet the challenge.

Team Preparation Choose team roles: –Leader: Make sure each team member contributes ideas; Communicates with the foreman –Materials Manager: Gets supplies; don’t be afraid to ask for help –Recorder: Keep track of plan and data; prepare to share with teammates; –Reporter: Shares findings with classmates

Follow this Design Process Identify Problem Brainstorm Design Build Redesign Test and Evaluate Share Solution

Time Management You have 3 days to accomplish this task A Wisdom Walk will be held during the last 15 minutes of class on Thursday for each team to share their design.

What I Learned From Others: TeamMaterials used Period 4Observations# W 17 batteries, 150cm red wire, 22 wraps, 4 c bolts A few/a lot fell off. Dumped washers 39w 26 batteries, 80cm black wire, 26 wrapsRubbed with magnet, many fell in lift 17w 34 batteries, 3 nails, 50 wraps, 5 feet black wire. many fell off during lift. 31 w 45 batteries, 2 c bolts, 150cm black wire, 27 wraps. A lot fell off the bolts. Few washers 8 w 54 c bolts, 150cm red wire, 8 batteries 5 new energizer, 30 wraps. Few fell off during lift not many 84w 65 batteries, longer bolt, 134cm red wire, 48 wraps A lot fell off.35w
