1 Ratios Percentages and Fractions Lesson 2
Decimals

2 Objective Student will be able to represent ½, 1/4
Objective Student will be able to represent ½, 1/4., and 1/8 as a decimal, fractions and percentage. Based on what we learned on the previous lesson about ½ how can we then apply this to other fractions, decimals, and percentages? Remember are drawing on the graph paper? How can we use that strategy to figure out ¼? Discuss with your partner in a Think Pair Share.

3 ¼ compared to ½ On the left is ½. On the right is 1/4
On our 10x10 square how many squares did we fill in to represent ½? How did we represent it as a decimal and percentage? Discuss with your partner. ? 50% .50 50% .50

4 ¼ continued On a piece of graph paper draw another 10 X 10 square.
Divide the square in to ½. What is the relationship of ½ to ¼? How can you turn your square with ½ shaded into ¼?

5 ¼ Continued If you were going to express ¼ as it relates to ½ would you say it is three times smaller, four times smaller, two times smaller? What verbiage would you use? 1/4 1/4 The ¼ together = a 1/2 1/4 1/4

6 ¼ Continued ¼ is ½ the size of a ½ or ¼ doubled equals a ½.
How could we say the above sentence using decimals or percentages? Think Pair Share 1/4 1/4 The ¼ together = a 1/2 1/4 1/4

7 ¼ Continued How many of the 100 squares does ¼ use on your graph paper? How does the number of squares used represent the decimal, percentage and fraction? 1/4 1/4 The ¼ together = a 1/2 1/4 1/4

8 ¼ Continued ¼ is 25% of the entire 100%, but it is 50% of a ½.
.25 25% .25 25% The ¼ together = a 1/2 .25 25% .25 25%

9 ½ compared to 1/8 Let us now use our knowledge of ½ to compare it to 1/8. How does knowing how ½ relates to ¼ help us with the relationship of ½ to 1/8? Think Pair Share

10 ½ compared to 1/8 Draw a 10 x 10 square.
Divide your square in ½ and shade ½ of the square. Now divide your ½ square in ½ again to make a ¼. How do we now make an 1/8 using a ¼?

11 ½ compared to 1/8 Draw a 10 x 10 square.
Divide your square in ½ and shade ½ of the square. Now divide your ½ square in ½ again to make a ¼. How do we now make an 1/8 using a ¼? 1/4 .25 25% 1/8 ? 1/8 50/100 50% .50 1/8 1/8 1/2 1/4 1/4 1/8 1/8 1/8 1/8

12 ½ compared to 1/8 Draw a 10 x 10 square. 1/8 is a ¼ of a ½.
1/8 is ½ of a 1/4 How would you state in decimals and percentages the above sentences? Think Pair Share 1/4 .25 25% 1/8 ? 1/8 50/100 50% .50 1/8 1/8 1/2 1/4 1/4 1/8 1/8 1/8 1/8

13 ½ compared to 1/8 1/8 is a 25% of a ½. 1/8 is .25 of a ½.
1/4 .25 25% 1/8 ? 1/8 50/100 50% .50 1/8 1/8 1/2 1/4 1/4 1/8 1/8 1/8 1/8

14 ½ compared to 1/8 How many squares of the entire whole does an 1/8 fill? How would you express 1/8 as a decimal and percentage as compared to the whole? Think Pair Share. 1/4 .25 25% 1/8 ? 1/8 50/100 50% .50 1/8 1/8 1/2 1/4 1/4 1/8 1/8 1/8 1/8

15 ½ compared to 1/8 1/8 is 12.5 % or 12 and a ½ percent of the whole.
1/8 is .125 of the whole or 1. How does the shaded portion on our 10 X 10 model or show this to us? Think Pair Share 1/4 .25 25% 1/8 ? 1/8 50/100 50% .50 1/8 1/8 1/2 1/4 1/4 1/8 1/8 1/8 1/8

16 Extension Can you now do what we have done with a ½, ¼ and 1/8 with a 1/16 ? Work in Partners do accomplish this. Draw a 10 x 10 square. Represent with the shaded portion a 16th of the whole. Write decimals, percentages and fractions that compare a 1/16 to the whole. Write sentences that compare a 1/16 to a ½, ¼, and 1/8

17 Challenge Label each of the smaller areas as a decimal, fraction, and percentage of the total.

18 Challenge continued Check for Understanding
Using your challenge diagram draw and fill in the following table. Does it remind you of anything we did last week? Fraction Percentage Decimal Whole Half Quarter Eighth Sixteenth
