Investigating cemeteries scientifically, historically, and culturally

When you hear the word “cemetery” what are 3 things that immediately come to your mind? Write your responses in complete sentences.

Cemeteries are areas devoted to honoring the deceased. Cemeteries have different meanings for different people, but they are peaceful places where the deceased can be respected and remembered. Cemeteries are beautiful places that are filled with wildlife, plants, cool architecture, and unique landscapes.

Used as parks in around the world It was popular to have picnics in cemeteries in the Southern USA during the 1800s!

Arlington National Cemetery – Over 330,000 US soldiers buried since day-tribute

Canarsie Cemetery Over 4,900 buried here from Civil War to Present Day

Many cemeteries have habitats for wildlife and plants and unique landscapes Cemeteries possess qualities to teach about art, history, culture, science, architecture, and math

Arlington National Cemetery Scandal Over 200 graves of Army soldiers were mismarked and soldiers were misplaced. Some soldiers’ graves moved without notifying their families. Discovered in June 2010 People running the USA’s national military cemetery made major mistakes which led to the scandal.

At some point everyone will pass on. After a long and wonderful life, how would you want your memory to be preserved? Reflect on this question in your notebook.

The class will be using Canarsie Cemetery as an outdoor classroom to study rocks and minerals and what affects rocks and minerals. The class will take 4 field trips: American Museum of Natural History Geology Walk Seaview Park Map Making Exercise Canarsie Cemetery Data Collection Complete an Exit Project-Style poster board
