5 CATHAY WILLIAMS aka WILLIAM CATHAY

6 Cathay Williams was a former slave woman who enlisted in the United States Army under the alias William Cathay, circa 1866. Private Cathay served honorably in the 38 th Infantry for about 6 years in spite of numerous medical examinations and hospitalizations by Army physicians. Cathay Williams is considered to be the first and only female Buffalo Soldier in Unites States military history.

8 Women In Military Service is a stamp that was issued by the United States Postal Service on 18 October 1977 to coincide with the dedication of the Women In Military Service for America Memorial in Arlington National Cemetery. It represents the five branches of the armed forces and at the time it was issued nearly 2 million women had and were serving in the armed forces since the Revolutionary War. By 2014, the number has grown to over 3.5 million.
