The Dutch settle in New Netherland BY MICHAEL MCLAIN AND MATTHEW SALWAY

The Dutch West India Company  The Dutch West India Company gains control of all fur trade in areas of North America claimed by the Dutch.

Fort Orange  Fort orange becomes the first permanent European settlement in what is now New York.

Colonists move to Manhattan  The colonists move from Fort Orange to Manhattan Island for protection from attacks by Native Americans.

The Colonists build a new settlement  The Colonists built a new settlement on the southern tip of Manhattan Island, which they named New Amsterdam.

Trying to Receive Land in New Netherland  In order to receive land in New Netherland, each patron is asked to bring 50 new settlers to the colony.

William Kieft  William Kieft, the leader of New Netherland, is ordered to return to the Netherlands.
