April 14, 1865, Lincoln was assassinated at Ford's Theatre in Washington Lincoln won re-election in 1864, as Union military triumphs heralded an end to the war

the symbol of Union victory during the Civil War On July 2, 1881, in a Washington railroad station, shot the President. the only President to leave the White House and return for a second term four years later

His second term, which had begun auspiciously, came to a tragic end in September 1901 He was standing in a receiving line at the Buffalo Pan-American Exposition when a deranged anarchist shot him twice. He died eight days later.
