Westward Expansion Lesson 1, 2, 3

Objective  To understand how humans use and modify the physical environment  The importance of work  To communicate in written, oral, and visual forms

Words to know  Covered wagons: a wooden wagon, generally 4 feet wide and 6 to 10 feet long. Thin wooden bands curved upward from each side of the wagon to support the canvas top. The wheels were high so the wagons could clear trees stumps on dry grounds and keep their contents dry when crossing riverbeds. Covered wagon were pulled by horses, oxen, or mules.

Activity  For the next three lessons we will be creating a covered wagon.  You will be given wax paper, craft sticks and liquid glue.  Write your name on your piece of wax paper and on one of the craft sticks.  Glue 4 craft sticks side by side and the 1 craft stick with their name on it across the 4 so it looks like 5 tally marks  Glue the remaining sticks together in groups in 2 for the sides of the wagon.

Meet Davy Crockett  /c/crockett/coloring.shtml /c/crockett/coloring.shtml  How does our life differ from that of Davy Crockett?  Where do we get our food?  How are our homes different?  What about school?  How and why are clothes different?

Journal Writing  What is a journal?  You will write a journal entry about how your lives differ today from that of Davy Crockett at 7 or 8 years old.  Let’s review the writing rubric.  Now you will write your journal entry.

Activity  For the next three lessons we will be creating a covered wagon.  Day 2 of our Activity  You will glue the two sets of popsicle sticks to the base of the wagon. This will create a U-Shape  You might have to work as a team.

Tall Tales  A tall tale is a story about a person who is larger than life or bigger than someone could really be in real life. These stories involve a lot of exaggeration or hyperbole. This makes it very funny.

Westward Expansion Lesson 3

Activity  For the next three lessons we will be creating a covered wagon.  Day 3 of our Activity  You will use 3 pipe cleaners and paper  We have to cut the pipe cleaners in half  Twist 1 whole pipe cleaner and ½ pipe cleaner together to make 1 long piece  Glue the ends of the pipe cleaners to the inside of the craft stick wagon body at each end.  Hold until it sticks (this may take 30 seconds or longer)  Set aside

Activity continued  Using heavy cardboard cut 4 ½
