We know that books can be divided into two groups: Fiction and non-fiction Fiction and non-fiction books can be divided into groups. Today we will learn about a group of fiction books called Tall Tales

3 Tall Tales are fictional stories that stretch the truth.
What is a tall tale? Tall Tales are fictional stories that stretch the truth. Tall tales are part of literature called folktales. Folktales are stories passed along by word of mouth and sometimes written down.

4 Tall tales were told in America by the settlers who made their homes in the American wilderness. After a long day's work, people would gather together and tell one another unbelievable stories about exaggerated weather, animals or characters.  

5 Through the telling of the story, characters were given exaggerated characteristics.
They are bigger or stronger than real people and solve problems in a way that is hard to believe.

Paul Bunyan, Johnny Appleseed, Davy Crockett, Sally Ann Thunder, Ann Whirlwind Crockett, John Henry, Pecos Bill, and Slue-Foot Sue.
