Analyzing Yourself as a Communicator Chapter 8 Person to Person

Self-disclosure Self-disclosure is sharing personal information or feelings with another person.

Self-disclosure People engage in self- disclosure to create and maintain relationships.

Use the following categories to begin thinking about your self-disclosure.

Public Things most people would know about individuals.

Public/Private Things individuals would tell others if they asked questions.

Private Things only a few others might know about individuals.

Example of self-disclosure categories Public: I’m athletic. Public/Private: I write poetry. Private: Certain fears.

Johari Window Is a four-part box diagram which represents the awareness people have of themselves and others.

Imagine the first stage Known to Self Not Known To Self

Then, imagine a second stage. Known to Others Not Known To Others

Now, put the two stages together into the full Johari window.

1 OPEN 2 BLIND 3 HIDDEN 4 UNKNOWN Known to Self Known to Others Not Known to Others Not Known to Self

The quadrants can change size/shape for various people.
