2 Definitions Physical Environment-the surroundings in which communication takes place Climate-emotional atmosphere Communicator-people involved in an interaction Message-information exchanged b/n communicators

3 Definitions Channel-space in which the message is transmitted Noise-anything that interferes with a message Feedback-response to a message

4 Self-Concept Def: the view you have of yourself (also known as self-perception) Factors that influence self-concept –How you perceive that you are seen and treated by others (Can be influenced by personality test) –Your own expectations and the standards you set for yourself –How you compare yourself to others –Your past

5 Importance of Self-Concept SC lays the foundation for your communication with others You will repeat certain patterns You will develop a “script” for certain situations

6 Building Positive Self-Concept Identify your strengths Identify the areas that need improvement Study your personality traits (ex: perhaps your emotional self influences too many decisions)

7 Building Positive Self-Concept Make changes to your physical self (smile, weight loss) Set goals for change and help yourself with self talk and visualization Write goals down Ask for feedback

8 Self-Fulfilling Prophecy Def: a prediction or expectation of an event that shapes your behavior, making the outcome more likely to occur Your expectations are based on your self concept, expectations of self, interactions with others and perceived expectations of others

9 Self as a Communicator Self-disclosure: the deliberate revelation of significant info. about yourself that is not readily apparent to others Must know what facts, opinions or feeling are appropriate to reveal under the circumstances.

10 Johari Window Open-things you know and allow others to know Blind-known to others, not to you-ex: you may not notice that you tend to cut people off and you probably don’t know how people perceive you Hidden-you know certain things about yourself that you choose not to share with others Unknown-Old memories, subconscious fears

11 Johari Window Your own interaction style affects the feedback you get from others You are completely in control of this aspect of your life and through goal setting and monitoring, you can change it.
