Linear Functions Essential Question: If a scientist created a machine that changed any single syllable animals into a two syllable animal, & the scientist dropped a dog into the machine... A few minutes later it spit out a zebra. What was the dependent variable & independent variable?

Vocabulary Independent Variable - the variable that is varied or manipulated by the researcher. In other words, it is the input value. Dependent Variable - the response that is measured. In other words, it is the output value. Linear Function – a function whose graph is a straight line. A linear function has one independent variable and one dependent variable. The independent variable is x and the dependent variable is y. Essential Question: If a scientist created a machine that changed any single syllable animals into a two syllable animal, & the scientist dropped a dog into the machine... A few minutes later it spit out a zebra. What was the dependent variable & independent variable?

Functions Illustrated Essential Question: If a scientist created a machine that changed any single syllable animals into a two syllable animal, & the scientist dropped a dog into the machine... A few minutes later it spit out a zebra. What was the dependent variable & independent variable? A function is nothing more than a RULE.

EXAMPLES Essential Question: If a scientist created a machine that changed any single syllable animals into a two syllable animal, & the scientist dropped a dog into the machine... A few minutes later it spit out a zebra. What was the dependent variable & independent variable? Rememer: Independent Variable is the input, Dependent Variable is the output (answer)!
