1 Lesson 1.7 Represent Functions as Graphs
Essential Question: How do you represent functions as graphs?

2 Before we start… Look at the two graphs below, what do you notice? Share with your partner.

3 Functions as Graphs Graphs can be used as a representation of a function. Given a table for a function, each corresponding pair of input and output values forms an ordered pair of numbers that can be plotted as a point.

4 Input and Output The input is the x-coordinate.
The horizontal axis of the graph is labeled with the input variable. The output is the y-coordinate. The vertical axis of the graph is labeled with the output variable.

9 Write a Function Rule Using a Graph
Given a graph of a function, you can write a rule for it. Use the graph to make a table to show the input and output values. Identify a relationship between the input and output to write the rule.

10 Write a rule for the function represented by the graph.

11 Write a rule for the function represented by the graph.

12 Write a rule for the function represented by the graph.

13 Turn to page 46 and complete #10 and #11 with your partner.

15 Ways to Represent a Function
You can use a verbal rule, an equation, a table or a graph to represent a function.

16 How do you represent functions as graphs?

17 Ticket Out the Door Write a rule for the function represented by the graph.
